How to Repair Hardwood Floor Scratches

Having hardwood floors in your home, scratches are unavoidable no matter how careful you are. They are often caused by objects being pushed or dragged across the floor, pets, and children playing in the house. There are different types which require different techniques of repair. The following are the most common types that do not require replacement and can be fixed simply by following step by step techniques.

Surface Scratches

This only destroys the floor’s protective coating. It is simple to fix this even without the assistance of an expert. To remove this you just require a soft cloth, water, hard wood floor cleaner and a protective coating.

Steps to follow for repairing a surface scratch:

  1. Being the easiest scratch to fix, you first need to clean the floor at the scratched area using the soft cloth and water. If there are stains you can use hardwood floor cleaner.
  2. Moisten a cloth with clean water and moisten the area
  3. Allow it to dry completely.
  4. At this level you can apply the new coating. Ensure it is of the same color as the floor.
  5. Let the surface dry completely.

Minor Scratches

These are a little deeper. They penetrate the surface of the wood through the protective coating. For fixing hardwood, you just need to use everything shown above. In addition you may require a steel wool or fine- grade sand papers and wax wood repair stick.

Steps to fix minor scratches:

  1. Clean the surface and let it dry completely
  2. Rub the surface with the steel wool carefully. Do not rub across the wood to avoid increasing the mark.
  3. Quill the edges of the scratch slightly and rub using the grain of the wood
  4. Blend the scratch by rubbing the area with a wax stick of the same color as the rest of the hardwood.
  5. Let the wax to dry and then clean with a soft clean cloth.

Deep Scratches

These are like gauges and deep grooves in the surface of the hardwood. They require much attention and sometimes may call for an attention of an expert.

To repair these scratches you will need the following in addition to what we have used in the above steps:

  • Mineral spirit
  • Premixed wood filler
  • Polyurethane
  • Scouring pad

Steps to fix deep scratches:

  1. Humidify the scouring pad with the mineral spirit.
  2. Softly rub the scratched surface with the moistened scouring pad.
  3. Wipe the area with a clean cloth and wait for it to dry
  4. Fill it with the premixed wood filler
  5. Apply the polyurethane to deliver a renewed finish
  6. Do not use wax sticks on polyurethane.
  7. If you cannot handle it, find an experienced expert.

Additional Tips

  • A darkened grayish hard wood floor may only need a comprehensive cleaning to divulge an attractive healthy finish. Only for surface scratches.
  • When gouges, scratches and dents are not bad enough you may try the latex wood patch.
